Week 5 of the series on discipleship. Over the next three months, we are looking intently at the book of Matthew; specifically we will be focused on the teachings of Jesus directly related to discipleship. On this Sunday, we looked Jesus' question for the disciples, "Who do you say I am?" Their response and Jesus' revelation to them based upon this response is telling and challenges to consider the same question.

Episode Notes

Matthew 16:13-19, Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”  Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar- Jonah!  For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in Heaven.  And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

WHO IS JESUS?

1.  Popular opinion

  • Many accept Jesus as a great moral teacher of His time.

2.  Divine revelation

  • God presents Jesus as the Messiah sent from Heaven.

3.  Personal conviction

  • The most important question:  Who do you say that Jesus is?

Matthew 10:32-33, So everyone who acknowledges Me before men, I also will acknowledge before My Father who is in Heaven, but whoever denies Me before men, I also will deny before My Father who is in heaven.

CHALLENGE:  Take a moment to acknowledge Jesus as if your eternal destiny is at stake.
