Living in the Year of the Lord's Favor

Series: Seek & Save

May 05, 2019
Frank Foreman

This week, Frank continues our new series traveling through the book of Luke. This week, we open up the narrative in Luke 4 and find Jesus in the synagogue. As he proclaims His mission and the fulfillment of prophecy through this mission, He challenges each of us to take on that mission as His Church. We have Good News to share with others, do we give proper importance to our mission to proclaim His Gospel to our friends, neighbors, etc.?

Episode Notes

Luke 4:16-21, And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as was His custom, He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and He stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” And He rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Isaiah 61:2, …and the day of vengeance of our God;

BIG IDEA

Jesus’s mission is the church’s mission…  Feel a sense of urgency

1.  Good News to the poor

Revelation 3:15-17, “‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth. For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.

2.  Release to the captives

Romans 6:22-23, But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

3.  Recovery to the blind

2nd Corinthians 4:4, In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

4.  Liberty to the oppressed

2nd Timothy 2:24-26, And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.
