Hearing and Doing

Series: COME Follow ... GO Make

September 23, 2018
Frank Foreman

Week 4 of the series on discipleship. Over the next three months, we are looking intently at the book of Matthew; specifically we will be focused on the teachings of Jesus directly related to discipleship. On this Sunday, Frank shared from a familiar story made more familiar by a children's song for many years. This story of a wise man and foolish man and their building plans really focus on a question of faith. Sincere faith is strong foundation for the spiritual life we build upon.

Episode Notes

James 1:22-24, But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.

Those who hear but don’t do … have a head knowledge without a heart knowledge.

Matthew 7:24-27, Everyone then who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.

1.  Each of us is building a house.

--House:  My life as a follower of Jesus.

2.  Each of us will encounter a storm.

--Storm:  God’s applied justice, favorable or not.

3.  Each of us will wish we had built on the rock.

--Rock:  My obedience to the teachings of Jesus.

Challenge:  Read the Sermon on the Mount.  (Chapters 5-7)
