We are not granted salvation by grace only to obtain assurance by works. Navel gazing, looking within for assurance, takes one's eyes from Christ's finished work while inevitably producing doubt and fear. Afer all, the best deeds of man will always be tainted with sin and unrighteousness. How, then, can we know we have eternal life if "doing one's best" still leaves plenty of room for sin and unrighteousness to creep in on the scene? How can we KNOW we have eternal life? We believe (God's gift of faith working through us by the testimony of the Spirit) the report of the Lord! The sweet and precious Gospel of Christ is glorious news to those who belong to the Lord. It reminds us of what Christ accomplished, fulfilled, forever settled on behalf of his elect people, chosen before the foundation of the world. It is the blessed story of Jesus paying the full price of eternal redemption, making us acceptable to God by Christ's own righteousness imputed unto us!
