Homily - Very Precious in God’s Sight (BlessedSacrament)

While still young she was given in marriage to Patricius;

  • Her husband was a Roman pagan;
  • An official in the Roman government in Tagaste, in modern day Algeria;

Patricius was a man of violent temper;

  • And, Monica suffered because of his character;

Her mother-in-law provided little comfort to her, because...

  • She, too, was possessed of convulsive spirit;

But, Monica remembered the words of the holy Apostle Peter:

Likewise you wives, be submissive to your husbands... Let not yours be the outward adorning with braiding of hair, decoration of gold, and wearing of robes, but let it be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable jewel of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. (1 Peter 3:3-4)

Patricius was also a wanton adulterer;

  • And again, in this her mother-in-law could offer her no aid;
  • For she, too, was of dissolute character;

But, she took to heart the counsel of the holy Apostle Peter:

Likewise you wives, be submissive to your husbands, so that some, though they do not obey the word, may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, when they see your reverent and chaste behavior. (1 Peter 3:1-2)

When others may have abandoned her husband...

  • And some may have offered this counsel;
  • She remained;
  • And, with many tears...

She prayed for his conversion, and that of his mother;

While Monica's prayers and Christian deeds bothered Patricius, he respected her beliefs. For years Monica prayed for her husband and mother-in-law;

And, her prayers were answered for her many tears!

Finally, one year before Patricius' death, both he and his mother converted to the Catholic Faith.

Happy is the husband of a good wife; the number of his days will be doubled.

(Sirach 26:1)

DEAREST FRIENDS:

Because of Saint Monica’s prayers Patricius will never die!

O Saint Monica: Pray for Catholic wives!

O Lord Jesus Christ: Have mercy on us!
